Sistahs Make Great Friends!
by RevSisRaedorah

I remember women's gatherings at mama's kitchen table.  The grown women swapped stories, prayers, tears and recipes to be strong, keep strong and get strong.
Sistahs make great friends!

Women used to be friends from playpen to grave.  Used to scratch your scalp, watch your kids, bring you soup, do your laundry, pick you up a loaf a bread, help you love through hard times, helped you get away from abuse.
Sistahs make great friends!

Every now and then, more and more, I wake up looking for that woman friend for company and wisdom that only we have -- and have to share!
Sistahs make great friends!

Woke up the other day and discovered that my women friends were Black, white, Latina, Indian, Native American, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Carribbean, French, multi-ethic/racial; Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddist, searching, indifferent; hetero, queer, abstainate, celibate, discovering; wealthy, working, welfare; in love and loved back, out of love and longing; genius, smart, witty, absent-minded, bodacious, reserved, arrogant, meek -- and a whole lot more of what I am and am not!
Sistahs make great friends!

Make a friend today; be a friend today -- with a woman as close as a natural sister or an unmet neighbor. Be bold, take the first step!
Sistahs make great friends!

Verse 1
You got that certain thang that can't quite be described;
Copied all over the world, it can't be denied;
And when you walk into a room the brothers be slippin' all up out they swerve…
Incredible woman, you're still my girl…!

Chorus 1
Sista, You know you got a friend in me;
Sista, We're sharing the power of femininity!

Verse 2
You brought my spirits up when everything was low;
You helped me to heal my heart and continue to grow;
And now I'm feeling so much better that I can do anything I choose;
With you in my corner I just can't lose!
Chorus 2
Sista, You know you got a friend in me;
Sista, I'm giving you props, respect and dignity.

Bridge
You don't know what you mean to me; You're the light of my life;
Strength in my fight, The stand in my feet;
And Ohhhh, sho' do like the way you roll,
Auntie, Mama, Grandmom, Daughter…
Chorus 3
Sista, I'm giving you my heart and soul;
Sista, Because it was you who helped to make me whole again.

Chorus 1
Sista, You know you got a friend in me;
Sista, We're sharing the power of femininity!

Take Time Out ... With a Sistah!

"Hello, Sistah.  My name is..."
introduce yourself to a woman you see often or in passing

Tea at a frou-frou tea room.
dress up and linger over exotic teas and finger foods

Split a salad and soup and decadent dessert at lunch.
sharing = half the calories

Greeting cards at every holiday.
or, for no occasion at all

Get eyebrows waxed together.
or any service in a day spa

Bring her dinner...
the first day the kids are off to camp or college
because she hit her head on the glass ceiling
after a day in divorce court
the night before surgery
every week of recovery

"One of the new terms is role model.  When people do not want to do what history requires, they say they have no role models.  I'm glad Phillis Wheatly did not know she had no role model and wrote her poetry anyway.  I'm glad Harriet Tubman did not know she had no role model and led the slaves to freedom.  I'm glad Frederick Douglass did not know he had no role model and walked off that plantation in Maryland to become one of the great oratorical fighters for freedom."
Nikki Giovanni, poet
